Simeon was ready.
Ready to see the purpose of his life fulfilled.
“And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him. And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.” – Luke 11:25-26
Ready to say words he had prepared long before.
Ready to live like never before.
Ready to die.
Having lived a faithful life, patiently, confidently, and joyfully expecting to see Messiah before he died, Simeon took the baby Jesus in his arms and blessed him. The created cradled the Creator. An old man embraced the Ancient of days. One prepared to go into God’s presence, as the other had just left God’s presence. One began his farewell to Earth, even as the Other for a time said farewell to Heaven.
So many contrasts present themselves at the meeting of Simeon and Jesus. As a new year begins I believe we do well to look at the example set by this godly man.
1. He Lived to See the Lord
2. He Lived to Submit to the Lord
3. He Lived to Serve the Lord
4. He Lived to Speak of His Lord
Simeon, devout and just, waited for the consolation of Israel. His whole life revolved around the theme of seeing Jesus. He looked for Him constantly and was always ready to meet Him.
Simeon, moment by moment obeyed the Lord. So that he would be found at the right place and at the right time. Always ready to submit to the Lord.
Simeon, the servant. He served by worshipping. He served by fellowshipping with others who waited for the consolation of Israel. He served by encouraging others. As he served, he remained always ready to meet his Master.
Simeon lived to speak of the Lord. The text reveals that Simeon had a knowledge of Scripture. And as he held Jesus in his arms he proclaimed deep truths. He spoke as one always ready.
May God find us ready, as He found Simeon.
