Isaac and Rebekah: (4) God’s Guidance in Life’s Journey

Scripture: Genesis 24:27, 48

Throughout this record, we see God’s guiding hand at work. Abraham’s servant recognizes and acknowledges this divine guidance, repeatedly giving thanks to God for leading him “in the way.”

This story illustrates a beautiful truth: when we walk in God’s ways, He directs our paths. The servant was faithful to his mission, and God led him precisely where he needed to go. He didn’t just stumble upon Rebekah by chance; it was a divine appointment.

In our own lives, we may not always see God’s guidance as clearly in the moment. Sometimes, it’s only in looking back that we recognize how God has been directing our steps. This doesn’t mean we’ll never face challenges or make mistakes, but it does mean that God is always working, even when we can’t see it.

Proverbs 16:9 says, “A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.” This verse captures the balance between our choices and God’s sovereignty. We make plans and decisions, but ultimately, it’s God who guides our life.

That balance is also seen in the repeated mentions of the need for Rebekah to be willing to go. She could not be forced by the servant or family members to marry Isaac, she had to freely choose to go.

Today, take some time to look back over your life. Can you see instances where God has guided you, perhaps in ways you didn’t recognize at the time? Give thanks for His direction. Then, look at where you are now. Are you seeking God’s guidance in your current situation? Ask Him to make His way clear, and trust that He will direct your path as you walk faithfully with Him.
