Book Review: “Endurance”

The story of Ernest Shackleton is perfectly summed up by the title of this book taken from the ship on which he sailed, endurance.

Ernest Shackleton’s leadership, skill, and determination not only saved himself but the 28 men who sailed with him from almost certain death. What he and his men went through to survive is the stuff of legends. They survived some of the most inhospitable conditions on the planet and lived to tell the tale.

This is a book I highly recommend.

(Spoilers beyond this point)

Shackleton and his men were missing for over 750 days and presumed dead. When one day, from inland Elephant Island, he and his men appeared out of the fog. No one had traversed the island before for one simple reason that Lansing brings out – it was impossible. Shackleton was in the habit of achieving the impossible and this was just one of many times that he did.

There are many moments in history I would love to be able to observe. The moment Shackleton arrives at the whaling station on Elephant Island and calmly tells Petter Sørlle, the manager of the station, “I am Shackleton” would be one of those times.

His life’s story is worth knowing and this book tells it well.
