Scripture: Genesis 43:18-25
Key Verse: Isaiah 26:3 – “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.”
Jacob and eleven of his sons were afraid because they did not trust God. That distrust of God led to being dominated by fear.
Joseph’s brothers were overwhelmed by fear when they were brought to his house. They assumed the worst—that they would be punished for the money found in their sacks. Yet, behind the scenes, Joseph was working for their good. They feared punishment, but he was preparing a feast.
Joseph, living in God’s grace, was able to know God’s will, do it, and help others, Jacob, living in fear, was only able to think of himself. When the brothers first mention going back to Egypt and needing to take Benjamin with them, Jacob’s thoughts turn to himself. He asks in verse 6, “Wherefore dealt ye so ill with me?” As if they had deliberately tried to hurt him. Fear will make us selfish.
A lack of faith will make us fearful about our relationships, employment, the future or the past, and finances.
Application: How often do we assume the worst when God is actually working for our good? We look at our circumstances and believe God has abandoned us when, in reality, He is orchestrating a plan beyond our understanding.
When fear tempts you to assume the worst, choose to trust God instead. Remind yourself that He is working even when you cannot see it.
