Isaac and Rebekah: (1) The Importance of Prayer in Decision Making

Scripture: Genesis 24:12-14

Abraham’s servant, commissioned with finding a wife for Isaac, demonstrates the crucial role of prayer in decision-making. As soon as he arrived at his destination, his first action was to pray for God’s guidance. He doesn’t rely solely on his own judgment but seeks God’s leading in this important task.

In our lives, we often face decisions that can shape our future. Like Abraham’s servant, we should make prayer our first recourse, not our last resort. This doesn’t mean we set up arbitrary tests for God, but rather that we earnestly seek His wisdom and direction.

The servant’s prayer was specific and faith-filled. He believed God would answer, and indeed, before he had even finished praying, Rebekah appeared. This reminds us of Isaiah 65:24, “And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.”

How often do we rush into decisions without consulting God? Whether it’s choosing a career, a spouse, or making a significant life change, prayer should be our starting point. God is interested in every aspect of our lives, and He promises to guide us if we seek Him.

Today, reflect on the decisions you’re facing. Have you brought them before God in prayer? Take time to seek His guidance, believing that He will direct your path. Remember, as Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. (6) In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
