Introducing Joseph 1/3: Pilgrims

Scripture Reading: Genesis 37:1-4; John 17:14-15; Acts 7:5

Yesterday we continued our series of sermons at Bedford Bible Church going through the Book of Genesis. We’re picking back up after a short break with the life of Joseph. Over the next few days, I’ll post some brief, devotional thoughts on my blog. You can listen to the whole service and sermon here: https://bedfordbiblechurch.sermon.net/main/main/22358612

Joseph’s life is defined, largely, by his integrity, faith, and forgiveness.

Pilgrims in a Foreign Land
Life often feels like a journey through foreign territory. As Christians, we are called to live as pilgrims, navigating this world while keeping our eyes on eternity. Joseph was born into a family marked by earthly troubles—betrayal, favoritism, and grudges. Yet, even in this setting, his life stood out as an example of faithfulness.

Abraham, Joseph’s great-grandfather, was a literal pilgrim who never owned land but trusted God’s promise. Joseph’s life mirrored that mindset—though dwelling in Egypt, he kept his eyes on God’s eternal plan. Similarly, Jesus calls us to live in the world but not to conform to it (John 17:14-15).

  1. What earthly distractions are drawing your attention away from eternity?
  2. How can you cultivate a mindset that balances living in this world while focusing on heavenly things?
