Book Review: George Whitefield: The Voice the Woke the World

I’ve been familiar with bits and pieces of the life of George Whitefield for most of my life. However, it wasn’t until I listened to this book that I realized how little I really knew about his life as a whole.

Whitefield was one of the figures of church history that seemed to be uniquely gifted by God but also supremely surrendered to God. The result? A life that God used in the church but also to influence nations. It’s a fact too often ignored or overlooked that men like Whitefield and Jonathan Edwards helped shape nations. Arguably, the UK and USA would not be what they are today without men like them.

This book is targeted at children, but I believe people of any age would enjoy it.

Travis brings out not only the spiritual maturity of George, but also his wife, Elizabeth.

She deals fairly with the rift that developed between Whitefield and the Wesley’s over Calvinism. They never came to a full agreement, but they did heal their friendship and supported each other in the preaching of the Gospel.

I highly recommend this book.

Your children want heroes – give them something better than Ironman or Superman, give them real life heroes like George and Elizabeth Whitefield (already have another review in mind, well two, where I will say this same thing).
