Eri Liddell was a world class athlete. Apart from the physical exertions of competing, he could have had a comfortable and acclaimed life.
Eric Liddell was a much loved preacher and public speaker. He could have toured the UK and the world speaking in comfortable church and auditoriums. He could have been well-sed of the Lord.
Instead, he returned to China where he had been born. His parents were Scottish, but served as missionaries in China.
He went to his parent’s homeland for his education and while he was there excelled in many sporting activities. He is well-known for winning an Olympic medal and setting numerous records. Some of which were not beaten for many decades.
His passion for running was second to his passion for serving God. In fact, he ran because he believed it pleased the Lord to do so. His integrity was an outstanding characteristic and guided his behavior as an athlete every bit as much as it did his service as a missionary.
This is an excellent book that I highly recommend.
As I wrote in a previous book review: Your children want heroes – give them something better than Ironman or Superman, give them real life heroes like Eric and Florence Liddell.
