From Pulpit to Page: How My Commentary Began

Where did the idea and motivation for writing a commentary begin?

Many excellent commentaries exist, and I never set out to write one or considered myself qualified to do so.

However, earlier this year someone asked if I had some information on a particular text. That led me to combine sixty-one different sermons on Acts into a single file. The resulting document had over 110,000 words.

Because of the style of notes I use for my sermons, it already looked very much like a book.

I’ll share more about my theological and philosophical approach next, but I wanted to explain how this project started and how that impacted the results.

These volumes are based on sermons preached in the local church. As a result, they are intentionally different from a traditional technical or academic commentary.

They are part commentary and part devotional, combining biblical explanation with practical application. Rather than addressing every scholarly question surrounding a passage, the emphasis is on understanding the biblical text in its context, identifying its central truths, and communicating those truths clearly and faithfully.
